Standard Mattress Sizes - Facts and Figures


Getting a good night sleep is basically in the hands of your mattress. If you dont have a good mattress, chances are that you are not going to sleep well at all. This is why you need all of the information that you can possibly get on mattresses and standard mattress sizes before you buy.

When purchasing a mattress it's good to know something about the standard mattress sizes that mattresses come in. There are several different sizes of mattresses, from single mattresses for one person to several different mattress sizes for two people.

A twin size mattress is designed for one person. I've always thought the name 'twin mattress' was a little funny for describing a mattress that only sleeps one person. I suppose the term comes from the popular configuration for a bedroom where two people sleep. The use of two single beds is where the term 'twin mattress' came from.

The next larger size of mattress after twin is double or full sized. This is a good sized mattress for either an extra large single person bed, or a two person bed. As far as couple beds go, the full sized mattress is the smallest size that can most comfortably sleep two people.

All two people mattresses are at least seventy-five to seventy-eight inches in length, depending on the manufacturer. The longest beds are generally between eighty and eighty-four inches in length.

A queen size bed is larger than a full sized bed. Queen sized beds offer additional space for couples over that of full sized beds. King size is the largest mattress size available and is wider than it is long. Actually, more recently new sizes with the prefix 'California' have been invented to indicate mattresses with greater lengths than regular mattresses of the same sizes....
